Sleepwalking My Life on Seroquel

Imagen
I t was at the age of twenty-seven when I experienced my first ‘psychosis’. I worked as a financial analyst of banks and portfolio manager at a nice company in Amsterdam, and from the outside, my life looked pretty good. I had a cool job, lived in the center of the gorgeous city of Amsterdam, and was a member of the best sports club. I was living a dream life. Due to my extremely difficult teenage years in my native Russia, the disaster would probably have struck eventually, but when it arrived, it came unexpectedly. Till the age of 27, I was suffering from awful stomach pain, constantly and terribly, which prevented me from forming a meaningful relationship with anyone. It was the stress of huge abandonments and losses in my youth, that was storing in my stomach, to release, I assume, when the time was right. Yes, I do believe that any manifestation of what is called ‘mental illness’ is the trauma acquired when growing up. I suffered, felt unloved, and was absolutely insecure deep i...

Critical Psychiatry Textbook Chapter 8: Depression and Mania (Affective Disorders) (Part Ten)

Imagen
Editor’s Note: Over the next several months, Mad in America is publishing a serialized version of Peter G酶tzsche’s book, Critical Psychiatry Textbook . In this blog, he discusses the diagnosis of bipolar disorder, including in children, and the lack of evidence for any benefit from lithium. Each Monday, a new section of the book is published, and all chapters are archived  here . Bipolar disorder T he hospital-based psychiatry center in one of the five regions in Denmark mentions on its homepage that “Drugs for bipolar disorder—mood stabilising drugs—can prevent and cure depression, mania and mixed conditions in most people.” 416 This is very misleading. Psychiatric drugs only have symptomatic effects. They are not disease-modifying and they cannot cure people; they can only lessen some of the symptoms of the emotional pain. Similarly, aspirin cannot cure a broken leg, only lessen the physical pain. Psychiatric drugs cannot prevent psychiatric disorders either. About bipo...

Most super rich couples have breadwinning husbands and stay-at-home wives contrasting sharply with everyoneelse

Imagen
Men are the sole breadwinners in over half of super rich heterosexual couples – defined as those in the top 1% of households – while the women are not employed, according to our new peer-reviewed study . That’s twice the rate of less affluent heterosexual couples. Our finding is based on 30 years of data, from 1989 to 2019, from the Federal Reserve’s Survey of Consumer Finances . We examined how couples divide work, focusing on three different wealthy groups – the super rich, the just plain rich and the upper middle class, as defined by their wealth percentile, and compared them with those of less affluent couples. To get a better sense of how much money we’re talking about and the extreme differences among these groups, super rich couples in the U.S. had a median net worth of US$17.6 million in 2019. That compares with $2.3 million for rich couples – those in the next 9% of the wealth distribution – and $796,000 for the upper middle class, who were in the 10% after that. Our fourth ...

New psychology paper suggests dysfunctional relationships are a precursor to mental illness

A brief article published in Current Directions in Psychological Science discusses how relationships that become conflicted, unsatisfying or distressing can trigger a biological or psychological predisposition for mental illness. In this work, Purdue University psychology professor Susan C. South builds a case for why malfunctional romantic relationships can be important social-environmental triggers for psychopathology. Approximately 90% of the United States population marries at some point in their lifetime. And as much as 59% of younger generations (ages 18-44) have cohabited. Well-functioning relationships predict overall well-being. However, those who are unhappily partnered tend to experience unfavorable mental health consequences, and are more likely to meet the diagnostic criteria for disorders such as PTSD, depression, alcohol use, and generalized anxiety. Longitudinal studies support a direction for this effect, such that, distressed relationships lead to a greater likeli...

Digital distortions: Study explores the consequences of photo editing on self-perception and self-esteem in social media users

A recent study published in BMC Psychology looked into how editing photos on social media platforms affects people’s self-image, self-esteem, and comparisons with others. The findings suggest that editing photos can negatively impact how individuals perceive their attractiveness and overall self-esteem. This connection seems to be influenced by comparing physical appearance and treating oneself as an object. These results serve as a warning to social media users to be aware of the potential negative effects of using photo-editing tools or filters. Nowadays, social media is widely used by millions of people to connect and share their lives. However, research suggests that excessive use of social media may lead to mental health issues like depression and anxiety. One behavior that researchers have focused on recently is photo editing, which involves altering one’s appearance in pictures before posting them on social media. While some studies have suggested that photo editing is linke...

New study disentangles the influence of depression and anxiety on spontaneous neural activity

Anxiety and depression are widespread mental health issues in our society. They often occur together and can increase the risk of developing other mental and physical health problems. Researchers are using neuroimaging studies to better understand the underlying causes of these disorders. However, most studies have not taken into account the presence of both anxiety and depressive symptoms in individuals. A recent study published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research set out to identify common and specific neural patterns associated with depression and anxiety symptoms. The researchers utilized the UK Biobank, which is the largest repository of neuroimaging data. The researchers, lead by Jiangyun Hou of the University of Amsterdam, examined data from more than 20,000 individuals. The participants were categorized into four distinct groups: individuals with current anxiety symptoms, current depressive symptoms, combined anxiety and depressive symptoms, and non-symptomatic controls....

The desire to have a romantic partner is associated with lower life satisfaction but more so in older adults

A study of individuals between 18 and 75 years of age who do not have a romantic partner found that those having a greater desire for a partner tended to have a lower quality of life. This association between greater desire for a partner and lower quality of life was much stronger in those above 49 years of age than in individuals below 24. The study was published in Personal Relationships . In the past several decades, the share of people who are single i.e., who are not in a romantic relationship has increased greatly. Individuals who are single can be single because they never married or had a romantic partner, because they are separated divorced or because they are widowed. Some of these individuals are single because they do not wish to have a partner, but some of them remain single because they are unable to find a romantic partner. Since the 1970s, the typical age of marriage has increased. While a century ago people tended to marry in their late teens or early 20s, the typica...

Women who drink alcohol have an increased risk of sexual dysfunction

Many people know that alcohol can negatively affect men’s sexual performance, but what about women? According to a study published in BMC Women’s Health , women are at a significantly higher risk of experiencing sexual dysfunction when they drink alcohol. Sex plays an important role in people’s lives and can impact their overall well-being and quality of life. Sexual dysfunction refers to problems that prevent a satisfying sexual experience, and it can happen to both men and women. Previous research suggests that around 40% of women experience sexual dysfunction. There are several risk factors for female sexual dysfunction, including obesity, diabetes, drug use, smoking, and prolonged alcohol consumption. Alcohol use, including alcohol abuse, is quite common in today’s society and can have a significant impact on sexual behavior. This study aims to bring together existing research on the relationship between alcohol use and sexual dysfunction in women. Nader Salari and his colleague...
