New psychology research indicates physical attractiveness predicts health outcomes 10 years later

Physical attractiveness may indicate good health, according to new findings published in the American Journal of Human Biology . The study found that people who were rated as above-average in attractiveness tended to be noticeably healthier compared to those considered average-looking when assessed 10 years later. The motivation behind this study was to investigate the relationship between physical attractiveness and health outcomes. Previous studies have suggested that attractive facial characteristics are more likely to be found in healthy individuals, and people with attractive faces are often perceived as healthier. However, the reliability of these associations between physical attractiveness and health has been questioned from both theoretical and methodological perspectives. By conducting this study, the researchers aimed to provide a better understanding of the relationship between physical attractiveness and health, taking into consideration potential confounding factors. “...

C贸mo aprender a aceptar cr铆ticas? 6 consejos importantes

What Does it Mean to Be Borderpolar?

Imagen
“I feel like, to have both, it’s very painful,” said Sally (a pseudonym), who explained that her bipolar disorder was triggered by taking antidepressants, whereas her borderline personality disorder resulted from being physically abused as a child. “You can really fully recover from borderline, but for sure, bipolar, I never see going away.” Borderline personality disorder is such a problematic diagnosis that critics argue that it should be abandoned altogether, and not just because it is stigmatized. It pathologizes victims of trauma (especially women), its heterogeneous symptoms are not personality traits, and they overlap considerably with several other disorders, including bipolar. Nonetheless, most psychiatrists have converged on the view that it is possible for a person to simultaneously have bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder, a phenomenon referred to in shorthand as “borderpolar,” although this is not an official DSM diagnosis. According to Dr. Mark Zimme...

Scientists recently discovered some important facts about the phenomenon of blue balls

Imagen
What are blue balls? Most people — health-care providers included — are familiar with this term referring to scrotal discomfort experienced in response to prolonged sexual arousal without orgasm. Although no one knows how the pain of blue balls develops, most implicate the slowed drainage of blood from the testicles in the absence of orgasm during sexual arousal . One of the key physiological aspects of sexual arousal is increased blood flow to areas of the body , including the genitals. Genital-based signs of sexual arousal include engorgement of the genital structures leading to erection of the penis and external clitoris, and this engorgement usually resolves quickly after orgasm, which acts like a fast release valve. In the absence of orgasm, the increased blood flow can take longer to get back to a non-aroused state (think of a slow-release valve), which is hypothesized to result in discomfort or pain in some people . In addition, the genitals may take on a blue hue due to the...

People prone to anger are more likely to believe conspiracy theories study finds

Individuals who experience anger more frequently are more likely to endorse conspiracy theories, according to new research published in the Journal of Research in Personality . The findings indicate that anger plays a role in susceptibility to conspiracy theories, regardless of whether the beliefs are related to specific events or more general in nature. The researchers conducted this study because they noticed that there has been a growing interest in conspiracy theories, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic began. They wanted to understand why some people are more likely to believe in conspiracy theories than others. Previous research has looked at personality traits as possible factors, but they realized that traits related to emotional experiences were often overlooked. They specifically focused on the trait of anger because it is an emotion that can influence our beliefs and attitudes. Anger is an intense emotion that narrows attention and memory, potentially leading to a redu...

Study finds link between extracurricular arts activities and improved grades

A study conducted in Japan looked at how participating in music and visual arts activities after school affects students’ academic performance. The researchers found that being involved in these activities was linked to better overall academic performance. At first, participating in music activities had a negative impact on grades in the first year. However, after two years, it started having a positive effect. The study was published in the npj Science of Learning . Art education is often believed to cultivate creativity. Many see it as complementing the general education aimed at preparing individuals for professional careers and the world of work. Aside from developing artistic skills, art education can be said to promote self-expression and create a lifelong appreciation for art. In Japan, students have regular art classes throughout the year. They can also join cultural clubs that focus on artistic activities outside of regular school hours. Previous studies have explored the c...

New study identifies two psychological factors that help explain a puzzling gender equality paradox

In countries with greater gender equality, the difference in life satisfaction between boys and girls tends to be larger. But what accounts for this adolescent gender gap? New research provides evidence that fear of failure and competitiveness both play a key role. The findings, published in Frontiers in Psychology , highlight the complex relationships between gender, gender equality, psychological dispositions, and life satisfaction. Previous studies have shown that life satisfaction is generally lower in adolescence and that girls tend to have lower life satisfaction compared to boys. However, it was also observed that this gender gap in life satisfaction is wider in more gender-equal countries. This paradox raised questions about why girls are further behind boys in life satisfaction in countries with higher gender equality. To understand this paradox, the researchers wanted to explore the role of two personality traits, fear of failure and competitiveness, and how they may mediat...

New research examines the link between Big 5 personality traits and resistance to oppositional political content

Does personality predict resistance to dissonant political information? New research published in Personality and Individual Differences shows that while openness is unrelated to any type of resistance, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism show some links with the four resistance strategies the researchers tested. Personality shapes how we interact with the world around us. Prior research shows that the cognitive processes employed when dealing with counter-attitudinal information vary at the individual level. Variables such as commitment level, personal importance, or political sophistication may factor into how an individual faces oppositional political content. In this work, Chiara Valli and Alessandro Nai tested whether individual differences in personality might help explain resistance to dissonant political information. The Big-5 account of personality outlines a broad structure of human personality that is applicable to all adults; the five factors...

Morning exercise linked to healthier brains and happier children

A study of overweight children in Spain found that children who had more physical activities early in the morning had healthier brain white matter microstructure. These children also tended to be happier compared to those who had fewer activities in the morning. The study was published in European Child & Adolescent Psychiatry . Childhood is a period when the body undergoes rapid development. This development includes substantial changes to the structure of the brain. As the child grows, the structure of white matter of the brain develops as well. White matter is the tissue composed of nerve fibers that forms the communication network of the brain, allowing for the transmission of information and coordination of various brain functions. Previous research has shown that lifestyle factors like physical activity, sleep, and diet can affect the structure of white matter during development. Researchers observed that children who are more physically active generally have better indicat...

Fame-seeking mass shooters diversify their attacks to gain attention study suggests

New research provides evidence that fame-seeking mass shooters tend to diversify their attacks in order to draw public attention. The new findings provide insights into the characteristics of mass shootings, the motivations of perpetrators, and the relationship between fame-seeking behavior and the features of the shootings. The study is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). Previously, it was commonly believed that the notoriety of mass shooters was primarily driven by the number of people they killed (lethality). However, this study challenges that notion and suggests that “surprise” plays a crucial role in creating fame for mass shooters, even when considering the level of lethality. “Mass shootings are a major issue in American reality, affecting people independently of their background or identity, myself included. Fame-seeking mass shooters are the most lethal ones and understanding the way they think and operate could help partially address t...

New study provides insights on peoples motivations to be moral

Research published in the Journal of Personality pursued two fundamental questions: how can one become more moral, and why would one want to become more moral? It turns out that the primary motivation for moral improvement is for one’s own sake. Previous work has shown that people are more interested in improving their personality traits, particularly those that do not fall along a moral dimension. These might be traits such as anxiety or productivity. However, this finding may stem from constrained research methods. In this work, Jessie Sun and colleagues set out to understand the way in which people envision their own moral improvements by conducting two large pre-registered studies. Study 1 included 954 participants who were visitors of the YourMorals.org website, an online platform developed for research on moral psychology. Participants were prompted to describe one thing they want to change about themselves in order to become more morally good. These responses were coded alo...

A parents time orientation can significantly influence their parental distress and parenting practices study suggests

New research provides evidence that a parent’s focus on different time frames is associated with important parenting behaviors and experiences. The study, published in Personality and Individual Differences , indicates that those who are more focused on the present tend to experience greater parental distress and exhibit more negative parenting behaviors compared to those who are more focused on the future. The authors of the new study sought to explore the concept of future orientation, which refers to how much importance individuals place on the potential long-term consequences of their behaviors, and it’s relationship with parenting. Previous research has found that people who prioritize future consequences tend to make better decisions regarding their health, finances, and education. On the other hand, those who focus more on immediate outcomes tend to experience negative social, emotional, and health outcomes. But how future orientation is related to parenting had not been previ...

Regular pornography users do not experience withdrawal symptoms over 7-day abstinence

A recent study published in Archives of Sexual Behavior examined the impact of a week-long period of abstaining from pornography use on withdrawal symptoms experienced by regular pornography users, finding no effect. Withdrawal refers to the psychological and physical symptoms that arise when one discontinues using a substance or engaging in a behavior they have developed a dependence for. Common symptoms include depressed mood, anxiety, irritability, and insomnia. With growing access to the internet and digital technologies across the globe, pornography consumption has become highly prevalent, especially in the developed world, with roughly 47% of men and 16% of women in the United States reporting using pornography over the past year. Thus, studying the negative side effects of regular pornography use has piqued the interest of psychologists. In this work, David P. Fernandez and colleagues examined the effects of abstaining from pornography to shed light on the potential conseque...

Race and Abuse in Inpatient Settings: What Happens Behind Locked Doors

Imagen
I rvo Noel Otieno was a 28-year-old Black man who died of asphyxia due to being smothered by seven deputies in a Virginia mental hospital in March of 2023 . This didn’t get as much publicity as the George Floyd case and I’m not even sure if it inspired any protests. A very similar thing happened to me on multiple occasions. As a petite Mexican-American woman I ’ve been physically assaulted by nurses and security guards so many times that I lost count. One incident in particular that I remember happened at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, OR, I believe in 2011 or 2012, when I refused my medication because the doctor changed the dosage without consulting me. The male nurse called in a big burly male security guard to pin me down so that the nurse could forcibly inject me with medication. I remember the doctor actually being apologetic the next day saying they should have told me about changing my medication. When I asked another security guard about it, he angr...
